I found myself saying to this morning that I must have faith in what I’m doing with martial arts. It’s odd for me to use a word like faith, but this faith that I’m invoking is a faith in consequence, that doing something will undeniably cause something else to happen and by giving it all some thought and paying attention, I can see where things are headed. If I drink a glass of wine, then I know I’ll have a certain amount of alcohol in my blood, my inhibitions to do or say something will edge a bit lower, my body will warm up a bit. With a couple of more, I can pretty much guarantee that I’ll at least be a bit wobbly on my feet. These are things that can be expected and so I can have faith in their happening. I’ve studied martial arts for more than twelve years now, though not always with the same gong fu, or as diligently, but continuously at least to have kept everything I’ve been taught. In the past five years or so, I’ve become more serious. There’s a quote from Dave Lowry’s book, Autumn Lightning, that really sums it up for me: “Studying the martial arts is not something one “adapts” to his life, but rather one adapts the life to the art. It means changing one’s values, attitudes, and behavior. It does not mean taking up a hobby. One does not “do” kendo or aikido, for instance, with the same expectations that one “does” tennis. And it is partly through this realization that one puts his life in tune with countless masters and students who have come before him.” It’s a devotion that wasn’t entirely foreign to me before I came to martial arts. In many ways, it’s similar to a writer’s or an artist’s passion. It saturates one’s entire life because everything that one encounters can be viewed through its lens. I suppose the challenges I’ve faced in the past often had to do with whether the martial artist or the writer would get my full devotion. Both had seemed for a long time to be mutually exclusive and both seemed to require my full devotion for me to be satisfied with the work I was doing. Then Simmone asked me to start writing the text I’m now researching and writing. It’s been a lesson in balance, an integration of all aspects of me. A hard lesson, at that, considering my artistic side has always been a bit selfish.

Workout with Sam at his house. Had breakfast there (challah rolls with sunflower butter and marionberry tart) then accompanied him to Southbay to help him pick up groceries. Listened to Electromentalism in the car and he gave a few pointers and opinions. All in all he likes the album, especially “Greener Grass” and “Red the Snow”. Picked up some Honest Tea at the convenience store for the ride home. He played the Bach prelude for me again and he’s just starting to learn the fugue. Sam had to cancel going to this weekend’s Halloween party at Remi and Jesse’s because he has too much to do for his Master’s degree, so he gave me the costume he’d bought for the party. Now I don’t need to buy one of my own. Came home, checked e-mail, then took MUNI to mom’s. I accompanied her for a walk — the longest walk she’s had since her leg surgery. We walked down to Castro Street and rested at Posh Bagel, then walked back. Stopped at Walgreen’s on my way home. Showered. Went to Aaron’s for the evening. He had Indian food delivered — Saag Paneer, Coconut Chicken, Shrimp Curry and Garlic Naan. Home and to bed with a quick read from Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Warm-ups and xing-yi at home. Simu seems to be teaching me about one line of xing-yi every month and a half. It’s tough on the knees. Showered. Strawberry yogurt for a breakfast snack. Dropped off the car at Bay European for repairs. I’m not knowledgeable enough about cars and engines and the sort to say what exactly was wrong, but apparently there was a crack in something round and metal that has to do with the transmission. A couple of others things were replaced in the process, including a clog in a little fuel tube thingie. I like the shop. They seem honest and the prices are about half of what we used to pay at the BMW service shop. Took MUNI to the Castro and ran into Aaron in front of Orphan Andy’s. Had a hot chocolate at Peet’s with him and chatted about him detoxing over the weekend. He’s been avoiding people ’cause he’s been annoyed with life in general (the usual when its hot weather and he’s detoxing). I think I’m the only person who can deal with him in such times. Went to mom’s, helped her vacuum and dust. Then she treated me and Sam to lunch at Thai Chef. I had fish cakes and green curry chicken, plus a thai iced tea. An adorable new waiter served us. Couldn’t have been older than 23 or 24 and he kept smiling at me all through lunch. Even my mom noticed he was interested in me. I introduced myself on the way out and he told me which days he works in case I want to come visit him again. After I left mom’s, as I was walking down Market Street, I noticed a handsome black guy in a Mercedes looking me up and down while he was waiting at the traffic light, so I smiled back. About half a block later, I heard someone calling from behind me, “Where are you walking to so fast?” and turned to find that it was the same guy. He’d parked and run after me to tell me he thought I was tres sexy. He was tres sexy, too. Big and muscled. After we chatted a bit, I gave him my number. We’ll see what happens. Must be my lucky day. Two guys hitting on me in two hours. Was it the t-shirt I was wearing? Spent the afternoon waiting for the car to be ready, reading from Zhang Wei’s The Ancient Ship, first in the open court at Westfield, and then at the coffee shop around the corner from Bay European. The car was done around 5. Stopped at Safeway on the way home and picked up a deli vegetarian pizza and a Chinese chicken salad for dinner at home with Frank. Read a bit of news online and sipped some Bedtime tea. Read from Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Morning practice and lessons with Simu in Chinatown. Bacon and egg sandwich and a signature hot cocoa with nonfat milk at Starbucks afterward with Sam. Watched a bit from a French movie called Dans Paris and then another 30 minutes of High School Musical 2 at Sam’s place. Home. Showered. Took down more notes from Lao Tzu and Taoism. Its a tedious, but necessary step in writing the nonfiction book. Hundreds of pages of research notes from about 20 books. Made 10 grain blueberry pancakes topped with condensed milk for a very late breakfast since Frank slept till noon. Had a bit of a sugar low after that, so I took a nap. Kind of a lazy Sunday. Was supposed to have afternoon drinks with Aaron at his place, but he’s not up to it today. Downloaded a few vids from various porn blogs. It’s amazing how accessible good porn is these days. I remember when I was 16, I had to go to the back row of a little hole in the wall used bookstore in the French Quarter to dig through copies of Blueboy with the pages stuck together. Watched Heroes, Season 1, Episode 22 on DVD with Frank. Cooked dinner: niman ranch thick cut pork chops (marinated with honey and mustard) with blue lake green beans and ciabatta rolls. Read from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Morning practice with Sam at his house. Then had some bacon and honey Greek yogurt and watched about an hour of High School Musical 2 on DVD. Never had any plans to see it, but Sam had rented about 7 DVDs and that was the most promising of the bunch (he tends to go for really bad horror movies like Joyride 2). Sam played a bit of Bach. Came home. Laundry. Shower. Made breakfast for Frank: two eggs scrambled with sausage. Worked out decisions on most of the SF propositions for the November ballot with Frank and we hardly had any disagreements. Half a bowl of berry granola for a late breakfast – but I don’t like the chewy bits. Shaved. Frank and I went to Westlake Shopping Center for a few errands: Lunch at Daphne’s Greek Food, chicken kebab with salad and rice for me, gyro plate for him; browsing Halloween costumes at Beverly’s (Good, inexpensive selection, but I’ll go back later in the week when the store isn’t filled with kids); Trader Joe’s for a few groceries. Home again. Napped with Frank. I have to keep my naps to about 45 minutes or less otherwise I get groggy afterward. Took down notes from Max Kaltenmark’s Lao Tzu and Taoism, a translation from the French. Cooked dinner: baked chicken legs with butter and chervil, baked potato, and carrots. Watched Heroes, Season 1, Episode 21 on DVD with Frank. Did the dishes. Read from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers in bed.

Morning practice at the water reservoir. Shower. Breakfast at home: Hemp Plus granola with nonfat milk. Finished reading Edward II. Downloaded Justice’s Cross album and a handful of old Frank Sinatra songs from eMusic. Stopped at Walgreen’s on the way to mom’s to see if her prescription is ready, but it’s not — still waiting on her doctor’s authorization for refills. The flowers I gave mom for her surgery two weeks ago are still alive, amazingly enough, though the florist did say tropical flowers last much longer than roses and daisies. Considering the hot weather we’ve had lately, I think it was a good choice. Mom and I went to Peet’s at 9th and Bryant for a snack before we went to Trader Joe’s next door for her weekly shopping. Afterward, I stopped at Safeway to get more cans of Chunky Soup for Frank. His midnight snack. I say its too much sodium, but it doesn’t worry him. Soup out of a can just doesn’t taste right to me. Home. Corrected some of the levels on “Dancing Got Me Down” and added a new section between the bridge and chorus of “Swimmingly.” The rest of the album is polished, so its a bit frustrating to keep finding problems with these two tracks. Laundry. Trader Joe’s BBQ Chicken salad for lunch with iced tea. Strawberry yogurt as an afterthought. Finished edits to “Dancing Got Me Down.” Mitchell wrote back and said, although he didn’t get the manuscript yet, he already LOVES the title. Yes, he did use all caps. I like the title, too. In my fantasy world, Mitchell will adore the excerpt, swear that its the next Harry Potter, and get me a contract and a 6 digit advance from Vintage. We can hope. If it helps, I’ll even keep my fingers crossed. I’ve no time to work on the next section though — not until after I finish the martial arts book, which I’m hoping to be done with by January. Cooked dinner for Frank and me: lemon herbed tilapia with chervil/olive oil new potatoes, steamed spinach with boiled eggs, and a warm roll. Watched Episode 14 of Heroes, Season One with Frank. To bed with Lord of the Rings, somewhere at the Window on the West.

Morning practice and lessons with Simmone in Chinatown. No new steps in Xing Yi today, but a couple of corrections on staff and tai chi. Simmone asked about my mom’s leg surgery and I explained the procedure. Breakfast with Sam afterward at Starbucks: bacon and egg breakfast sandwich, warm chocolate croissant, hot chocolate. Watched another episode of Terminator. Home and showered. Made oatmeal for Frank. Read some more of Edward II. Polished up “Dancing Got Me Down,” but the song still needs some work on the last minute or so, basically everything after the last chorus dips out. Worked on the final two scenes in The Jade Fish of Perpetuity. Mitchell asked me to send a copy to him, since its being published in The Arroyo Review. Plus, I want to give The Arroyo the revised ending before its too late. Listened to Gui Borratto’s Chromophobia. He’s a Brazilian DJ and electro musician who did a remix of Goldfrapp’s “A&E” awhile back, too. Love his work. Bowl of oatmeal flakes for an early lunch. Laundry. Trader Joe’s pork potstickers with Frank for a later lunch. Worked on another track from Electromentalism, “Swimmingly,” still some problems with the transition from bridge to chorus. Might have to tweek the pitch of the main voice again and use the chorus melody over a short percussive interlude. Got lucky. Took a nap. Then finished up edits to both songs, as well as to the manuscript. I’m using Vrinda for my font now. It looks cleaner on the page and, to my eye at least, looks naturally better kerned. For the longest time, I always used Old Claude for my writing. It’s such a beautiful, classy font. Very old printing days of London in the 19th century. But the natural kerning of the font messes with my eye sometimes and I wind up making edits to my writing simply because I don’t like the way a line looks on the page. Dinner at home with Frank: flank steak with hoisin sauce and mixed veggies over steamed rice. This is one of those ‘make life easier’ meals because I just use Trader Joe’s frozen harvest vegetables with about a pound of flank and a half cup of Soy Vey Garlic Hoisin marinade. Used Kinko’s Fed Ex Print and Ship online to send The Jade Fish to Mitchell in New York. He should get it on Tuesday morning. A few bites of apricot sorbet for dessert, then to bed with a hot chocolate and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers again while Frank is out.

Morning practice with Sam at his place. My left leg is still a bit sore. Can’t kick quite as high as the right side. Basic muscle soreness, I think. Afterward, watched Season 1, Episode 2 of the latest Terminator TV series. I could take it or leave it, but Sam likes Thomas Dekker and those sort of low-budget, bad acting sci-fi shows. Personally, I liked Dekker’s quasi-queer character on Heroes better than his John Connor. Breakfast at home with Frank: simple omelette with orange pepper and parsley, onion and parsley biscuits, breakfast sausage, and cold ginger ade mate. Chai tea for me, too. Read Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II. Quick trip to Aaron’s in the afternoon. Let him borrow Goldfrapp’s Seventh Tree album. Bowl of oatmeal flakes for a late lunch at home. Frank left a message saying he was at his sister’s house and the car has a flat. Found out later on the phone that AAA patched up the tire and I’ll bring it into Big O for a proper fixing on Monday. Cooked dinner at home: boneless pork chops with garlic, rosemary and black pepper; corn on the cob; and Annie’s Bunnies and Cheese. Watched Heroes Season One Episode 12 with Frank. I don’t want to start watching the new season online until I remind myself of everything that’s already happened. That’s a good philosophy to take into the rest of life actually. We initially had started to watch Episode 11 with the commentary on, but none of the four actors had anything interesting to say. This happens a lot in commentaries. It’s as if people gather around a mike and decide to just narrate what’s happening on the screen. I want tidbits and weird facts. Showered. Read from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

I’ve been settling back into American life. The pills are kicking in, so to speak. I’m surrounded again by the millions of little things that help me forget that I’m human. I have every food I craved again. I can read and watch whatever I choose again. I have all those comforts and freedoms I so achingly longed for on a daily basis in China, madly craved, desperately made the most ridiculous promises to the karma of the universe if only to have again. The dog in me is soothed. I’m amongst my pack. They’re nuzzling my ears and wrestling me in the grass again. This is my life the way I like it. I’m back to my routines, routines that I now see give me my identity, really, so engrained are they in my daily functioning. I might not have even realized how important these simple routines are to my existence if they hadn’t been interrupted. But as I’m on the verge of pushing those ten weeks in Handan, China to an insubstantial corner of memory, dissatisfied as I am with the whole affair, even altered in my viewpoints, do I really want to ignore the opportunity to learn something from both my mistakes and theirs?
I’m not sure why I haven’t been able to write anything in my blog for nearly a month. I could chalk it up to writer’s block, but I’ve been revising my other stories perfectly capably. I’ve no lack of ideas. In fact, my head is just about brimming with them. I could guess the reasons why I haven’t written anything about this last trip to China yet, but when I guess reasons, the reasons don’t always make sense to me when I really analyze them, I mean deeply analyze them, and so I reject them as valid reasons because I don’t think of myself as a person who would be prone to those kinds of reasons, or weaknesses, or excuses for weaknesses.

The fact of the matter is that I haven’t wanted to talk about China. Even with my close friends, I’ve shunned the topic to a casual comment now and then, a funny story, some anecdote about spitting or staring, even though my closest friends are deeply curious about the hows and whys of my coming home in a third the time originally planned and with a brand new, far less flattering view on my once beloved red China.

It’s not so much that China even left a bad taste in my mouth, though it did, even physically; I’m just not certain if I’ve come to an objective enough understanding of what happened there to blame it all on them yet. I do believe there’s something here for me to learn about myself and the rest of the world. While to criticize an entire people and culture over my individual experiences, the strenuous stresses of my circumstances at a singular moment in one dirty, little Chinese town, seems on one hand an immature judgment formed from anger and resentment, yet, on the other hand, hadn’t that very culture made the people in that dirty, little Chinese town the sort of people they are today?

I was torn, I think. Because, to think in terms of my martial arts training, to consider how everything and everyone were connected, to understand that the culture that I subscribed to and the people I was encountering in Handan were so intimately related, seemed to damn itself by damning them. It’s been existential vertigo – it started the first day in Handan and still hasn’t ended. If I were a more outwardly emotional person, I might have had a breakdown or a tantrum. I think I’ve been tried, troubled, yet I’ve never seen myself as the sort of person who could get tried or troubled.

I think China represents a turning point. Perhaps the largest turning point in my life in any recent year. From the moment I got there, I began to question if it was actually the right thing to have done. Once I started to question whether I’d made the right choice, for the first time in such seriousness, I also began to deconstruct my trust in Chinese culture. For those of you who know me, I’ve spent most of my thirties constructing a large foundation of Chinese culture beneath my character, trusting that such a foundation would make me a better person, a more renaissance person, reading Chinese philosophies, studying their martial arts, training my mouth to speak their language. I’ve trained my mind to consider Chinese medicine first when confronted with an ailment. I’ve approached a true and logical spirituality that I’d never been able to fathom with Catholicism.

To shake this foundation then, questioning the logic with which I’d constructed many of the truths in my life, had added to the already immense pressure of adjusting to a strange country. Whether I could’ve admitted it or not, I wasn’t immune to homesickness, nor loneliness, nor could I so easily bend with the storm of situations blown at me. That sudden doubt then disallowed me from making choices that my martial arts training had already taught me to choose because I was questioning that training and its philosophy.

Tai ji chuan teaches me to balance the world and its relationships, to be like bamboo – strong but supple, flexible in every way. But would following the rules and suggestions of tai ji really grant me what I wanted so desperately as I stared at the dusty, vinyl floors of that apartment? The answer seemed to require faith, faith that the sacrifices I was undertaking would ultimately carry me further on my journey. Or perhaps, given that faith is so impalpable, it only required foresight, foresight enough to understand where that road was going.

In any case, some primal instinct had already taken control. The moment, caged and cold, circumvented any of the possibilities the future could offer. I was set in my ways. I chose to abandon China. However, I don’t necessarily believe that I also completely abandoned my training. Simmone has always said that we wouldn’t be students if we didn’t make mistakes. That’s always made sense to me.

I came to the decision that I needed to separate the various passions I have in Chinese culture from the culture itself. Like taking the cherries out of cordials. This seems a very un-Chinese thing to do. To study one part is to study every part. Nothing should be separated. But I was convinced that separating the martial art, the medicine, the literature, from the larger, now recognizably flawed culture, was precisely what I needed to do in order to continue to respect these various arts, preserve what I’d already gained from Chinese culture.

In other words, the experiences I’d had in Handan challenged my notions enough that I was tempted by anger to push it all away, all of the culture that I had ever studied, but some part of me still understood that this logic was flawed.

So I’ve decided to write about it now and then. I don’t suppose it’ll hurt to bare a little more of my private thoughts to the public domain, if only to be an entertaining and perhaps educational read for those who might be going to China, or some other strange foreign land. What I want most is to have learned something from China, or to learn something yet by writing about it. Writing this out in my blog is useful. Writing has always been useful in that way for me. The same way some people have conversations with their friends late into the night about their emotions, so too do I take them up with my computer.

I’ll end with this for today, since I’m being long-winded: One of the first mornings back in San Francisco, when I was walking down Market Street at about 9 in the morning, it seemed incredible to me that my research trip to China was all over and done with. I’d wondered, I’d planned for so many months for the trip, that it seemed trivial to be over and have not been completely changed by it. On the plane home from China, I wondered if it would all feel like a dream once I was home, if those 10 weeks would melt into a sort of … or if being home would feel like the dream.

I know everyone’s trashing Britney these days, but honestly, the girl deserves it, so I don’t feel too guilty pointing out a really funny parody of her VMA performance last month. But you know, the original still beats them all.

Aside from Britney’s new album hitting the shelves, a couple of other divas are keeping us entertained, as well. I checked out a few tracks from Annie Lennox’s new album and I have to say I’m sorely disappointed. Oh, I’m sure some people like this more brash and “rocking” side of Annie, but I’ve grown used to her introspective side and the beautifully-crafted moody songs from Bare and Diva.

Kylie has a new album, too, with the massively overused title X, but from the tracks I’ve heard, it’s a good-enough follow-up to Body Language. She’s promoting the new album in a unique way: following the link at the top of her myspace page, if you hand over your e-mail address you can download an album preview DJ mix, which gives a nice sample of the major tracks from the album. The first single of the album, 2 Hearts, is one of those take-it-or-leave-it pop songs, without much inspiration, but it gives a hint at the direction she’s taking — I think she’s trying to sound a bit like Goldfrapp.

Last, but not least, Roisin Murphy, the former lead singer of Moloko, has never disappointed me. Her new album, Overpowered, though more pop-oriented than her brilliantly unique first solo album, absolutely shines, in my opinion. The woman can do no wrong. I don’t know, there’s just something about her voice, something about the way she crafts lyrics and melodies, that sets her apart. She’s like a jazzy, street-diva version of Bjork without the funny accent and the screws loose. The first single, also named “Overpowered,” has stayed in my head for days.
